Alliance South Belfast MLA Paula Bradshaw has said there is much more to be done before the LGBT+ community here achieves full equality.

Ms Bradshaw was speaking as she participated in the annual Pride Parade in Belfast city centre. She was joined by other Alliance elected representatives and her predecessor as South Belfast MLA, Anna Lo.

“This year has seen positive developments such as decision to lift the life ban on gay men donating blood,” said Ms Bradshaw.

“However, there remain many obstacles to full equality for the LGBT+ community, including equal marriage and ending homophobic bullying in schools.

“But the positivity and overwhelmingly encouraging reception Pride events have received from the public throughout this week, culminating in today’s parade, show there is public support and willingness to combat that prejudice.

“Pride is not just an important celebration of the positive contribution of LGBT+ people to our community and of how far we have come as a society, but it is also a reminder of the challenges still faced by our LGBT+ people and an opportunity for us all, as friends and allies, to express our solidarity and support for overcoming those challenges together and delivering real equality for everyone.”
